The Object
As usual, starting the game means
placing an ante bet. After that the
player and the dealer receive five cards
each. All the player’s cards are dealt
face down, while the dealer’s cards are
face down also, except for one card.
Seeing the face-up card of the dealer
allows the player to make a decision
whether to fold (surrender) and lose the
bet, or to raise by doubling their ante.
To proceed, the dealer’s hand has to
meet a certain minimum, i.e. to contain
at least an Ace and a King. If it
doesn’t, the player is paid even money
for their ante bet, disregarding their
raise. If it does, the dealer’s hand is
compared to the player’s one.
The
player wins if he can beat the dealer’s
hand. The player
receives even money on their ante plus
any additional amount according to their
hand. Bonus payoffs for particular
combinations are set by the casino rules
but usually are as follows:
High Card – pays 1:1
One Pair – pays 1:1
Two Pairs – 2:1
Three of a kind – 3:1
Straight – 4:1
Flush – 5:1
Full House – 7:1
Four of a Kind – 20:1
Straight Flush – 50:1
Royal Flush – 100:1
The
player loses all their bets if he/she
cannot beat the dealer’s hand.
Basic Caribbean Stud strategy
Always raise with a pair or higher, fold
with less than ace/king, and raise on
ace/king if any of the following three
rules apply.
-
Raise if the dealer's card is a 2
through queen and matches one of
yours.
-
Raise if the dealer's card is an ace
or king and you have a queen or jack
in your hand.
-
Raise if the dealer's rank does not
match any of yours and you have a
queen in your hand and the dealer's
card is less than your fourth
highest card.
